Australian Dairy Farmers says Australia's livestock industries could benefit from following the European Union's renewed focus on food production and regional communities.

The European Union has released a new Livestock Strategy aimed at strengthening food security, farm resilience and industry competitiveness, while maintaining high standards for sustainability, animal welfare and traceability.

Australian Dairy Farmers President Ben Bennett says the strategy recognises livestock production as a strategic asset, rather than viewing it primarily through the lens of emissions reduction.

He says profitable farming businesses are essential if producers are to continue investing in animal welfare, environmental management and productivity.

Mr Bennett says many of the strategy's priorities align with Australian Dairy Farmers' long-standing policy positions, including improving resilience, supporting regional communities and maintaining global competitiveness.

The organisation is calling on the Federal Government to strengthen support for Australia's livestock industries, arguing continued investment in productivity, sustainability and innovation will be critical to maintaining the nation's position in international markets.
