For residents of Coober Pedy, accessing fresh, quality meat has been a bit of a challenge recently. But thanks to a community-driven initiative, help is on the way.

The effort began when local Shane Hall posted on social media about the difficulty of getting fresh meat in town, a challenge compounded by Coober Pedy’s remote location, where the nearest regional centres, Port Augusta and Alice Springs, are around a six-hour drive away.

“There really isn’t anywhere else to go,” Shane said, speaking with Jess Dempster on the Country Viewpoint on FlowFM. “So when things run short, people just have to go without.”

His post quickly caught the attention of Farmer the Fridge, a platform that connects Australians directly with farmers and butchers, sparking the idea of a special meat delivery for the remote South Australian town.

“I just came home one day, fed up with what was available locally, and thought, to hell with it,” Shane said. “I put a post up on Farmer to Fridge's community page they jumped straight on board. Before I knew it, people were stopping me in the street, asking when (the meat run) would happen. It’s been amazing.”

Also speaking with Jess on the Country Viewpoint recently, Farmer the Fridge founder James Gilbert explained the platform’s role.

“We’re essentially a conduit between farms and communities. We don’t buy and resell; we just connect people with fresh, quality meat straight from the source,” he said.

The delivery will be sourced from Ponde Meats, a family-run operation in South Australia, who will pack and transport the orders in refrigerated trucks.

“We’re underwriting this run to make sure it happens,” James said. “Even if there aren’t enough sales to cover it, the farm will still earn enough. If this works, we hope to make it a regular service, and possibly expand to other remote areas.”

Shane said the response from the Coober Pedy community has been overwhelmingly positive and a lot of locals are exceptionally keen to receive their orders.

“Australia Day has been and gone and a lot of people went without their usual barbecues,” Shane said. “Now they’ll be cleaning up their grills in a few weeks, just looking forward to the delivery.”

Shane was also full of praise for Farmer to Fridge and difference models such theirs that makes for quality. “

The meat goes straight from the abattoir to the people. It’s like buying from the butcher 30 years ago—real, fresh meat, none of the filler you see these days.”

Orders for the Coober Pedy meat run are open until Sunday, February 8, with deliveries scheduled for the following weekend of February 14–15. Residents can place orders via the Farmer the Fridge platform, with all meat prepared just a few days before the run to ensure freshness.

“It’s been great seeing the community get involved,” Shane said. “Honestly, I just put one post on Facebook, and now I’m coordinating orders and helping make sure everyone gets their meat. It’s been a real team effort.”

James added that while this is the platform’s first run to Coober Pedy, he hopes that could pave the way for similar deliveries to other remote towns.

"If this works, we could add more stops along the way and bring fresh produce to places that really need it,” he said.

Shane hopes the success of the meat run might also inspire others to step in with alternative supplies. “Now that it’s been proven something like this can work, it’d be great to see someone do the same with vegetables or other essentials,” he said. “Anything that gives people more choice helps get the town out of the monopoly it’s been stuck in.”

For Coober Pedy residents, the meat run is more than just a delivery—it’s a chance to enjoy quality cuts, support farmers, and see a community come together in a unique way.
