Work has officially begun on what Cattle Australia is calling a “once in a generation” review of the Cattle Transaction Levy.

A seven-member Committee has been appointed to oversee the process, including five producers from southern, northern, and western regions, and two independent specialists in government systems and research and development.

Over the next eight months, the Committee will engage widely with industry to gather views on the current levy system and its effectiveness.

CA Chair Garry Edwards says the review is critical to ensure levy funds continue to support research, development, marketing, and biosecurity initiatives.

“It’s 20 years since the last review, and we’ve focused on assembling a Committee with the right skills and industry knowledge,” he said.

The Committee’s first task is to assess whether the current system is capturing all available value and to identify opportunities lost due to structural gaps.

Recommendations will be presented to levy payers for a vote at the Meat & Livestock Australia AGM in November, with the aim of making the levy system more effective for the future of the industry.
