Budget Welcomed, but Labour Fears Remain for Horticulture

The National Farmers’ Federation Horticulture Council has welcomed several measures in this year’s Federal Budget, but says uncertainty around seasonal labour and ongoing cost pressures remain key concerns for growers.

Council Chair Jolyon Burnett says certainty around tax settings, the permanent instant asset write-off and action on fuel and fertiliser security are positive outcomes for the sector.

The Council has also welcomed the Government’s commitment to reducing regulatory burden, saying compliance costs continue to weigh heavily on horticultural businesses.

However, concerns have been raised about possible reforms to the Working Holiday Maker program, with growers remaining heavily reliant on seasonal overseas labour.

Mr Burnett says any changes reducing access to workers could disrupt harvest operations, strain supply chains and place upward pressure on food prices.

The Council is continuing calls for targeted cashflow relief, warning many growers have been unable to pass rising costs further along the supply chain.
