The Australian avocado industry is trialing new technology aimed at improving fruit quality and helping consumers select produce at the ideal stage of ripeness.

An Australian-first retail ripeness scanner is being tested in stores, using near-infrared technology to assess fruit firmness without damage.

The initiative targets one of the industry’s key challenges, with consumer handling a leading cause of bruising.

Research shows many shoppers squeeze multiple avocados before purchase, often resulting in internal damage.

The scanner provides an instant indication of ripeness and guidance on when the fruit will be ready to eat.

Avocados Australia Chief Executive Officer John Tyas says improving consumer confidence is key to increasing consumption.

He says the technology could improve eating quality while reducing waste across the supply chain.

The trial will assess the scanner’s long-term viability, with potential for wider rollout if successful.
