Victoria’s annual survey of game duck populations will commence on 21 October, with biologists set to monitor more than 850 sites across the state. The research, conducted by the Game Management Authority, forms part of the state’s Sustainable Hunting Action Plan.

Helicopter and ground surveys will assess species numbers and habitat conditions, supported by satellite imagery to gauge water availability. GMA’s Dr Jason Flesch said the data plays a vital role in understanding population trends.

“Results from this survey will help to accurately estimate total game duck abundance,” he said.

The findings will support the state’s Adaptive Harvest Management strategy, ensuring duck hunting remains sustainable. The survey is considered the most comprehensive of its kind in Victoria and contributes to broader conservation efforts.

Flights are scheduled until 8 November and may change depending on weather. The GMA has assured residents that disruptions will be minimal and that livestock safety is a priority.

Results of the survey will be published in 2026 at gma.vic.gov.au.
