AERIAL LOCUST SPRAYING UNDERWAY IN MID NORTH

By Jessica Dempster
Aerial spraying is underway in South Australia's Mid North and Flinders Ranges as the State Government targets plague locust populations before they develop into flying swarms.
Surveillance has identified significant activity north of Port Augusta, around Hawker and across parts of the Flinders Ranges, including large bands of locust hoppers.
The Government says early intervention will help protect crops, pastures and neighbouring properties, with aerial treatments focused on remote pastoral areas where locust populations commonly build up.
The operations form part of a $6.5 million statewide response package, including a $4.6 million chemical rebate scheme for eligible landholders.
Producers can claim up to $35 per hectare sprayed, excluding GST, for approved locust control products. Landholders are encouraged to report locust activity to the Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881.
