ADELAIDE UNIVERSITY OFFERS WHYALLA SUPPORT

By Jessica Dempster
Adelaide University is offering free education, reskilling and financial support to people affected by the closure of the Whyalla Steelworks blast furnace.
The university says its package will provide affected workers and students with multiple pathways into study, including foundation programs, diploma pathways and flexible ongoing courses, regardless of their previous education or experience.
Tailored advice on study, reskilling and future careers will also be available through a Future Skills and Business Transition Day, delivered with TAFE SA, as well as an Employer Connect event on October 15.
The university will also expand its grants and scholarships, helping people affected by the closure to consider university study or continue courses they have already started.
Adelaide University Vice Chancellor Nicola Phillips says the Whyalla campus has been part of the local community for more than 60 years, and the university wants to play a role as the region navigates the economic and workforce transition.
She says the support will be available to current students continuing their studies in 2027, as well as people considering university for the first time.
Details of the support package are expected to be made available over the coming weeks.
